How to sell a car in MA that won't pass inspection?

My '96 Jeep is in great shape, except it codes for O2 after replacing the catalytic converter, and I can't afford to chase down and fix the problem. Do I have to sell it for junk, or is there another way to get it into someone else's hands without having to repair it first? Should I just sell it "for parts"?

  1. Neither.

Just sell it.  You don't have to worry about it.  Let the buyer figure it out.  There are plenty of buyers who want to buy that kind of car / jeep and fix it themselves (to save some money).

It is not "junk" just because it can't pass inspection.

    Good Luck...

  2. The other answer is correct - but just be honest about it - and make sure the bill of sale states "as is". As long as you tell the buyer it has this problem, they can't come after you later saying you lied to them.

You'll find some young guy that will fix this problem himself

  3. There are no requirements for a car to pass an inspection prior to you selling it.  That will be on the buyer to fix before he/she can get it inspected.
