Question:

How to sell a damaged, but repairable, electric wheelchair?

I have a rather expensive electric wheelchair that I've meant to sell for over a year. It's very heavy duty, turns on a dime, and reclines fully. But, I didn't pay enough attention when I stored it, and left the battery hooked up. Now, there's corrosion at the connection points, and I fear the battery is destroyed. However, these are parts that are worth much less than the total value of the chair - but more than I can pay just to sell it. Without the damage, it was worth around $5-6K, judging from various listings around the web for used chairs of the same model. I'm only looking for a percentage at this point. Where would be the best place to advertise this?

  1. Ebay would most likely be the best place.

  2. Remember, however, that most people who need a specialty chair can get one free or cheap from insurance or the state- and if they get it that way then the repairs are covered.

Where I worked, we would get chairs like this donated all the time because people found that the donation value was worth more than the actual sale would bring. Annoyingly, we often had to discard the chair, even expensive ones that ran well, because we could not use them, and other charitable groups in the area are overstocked in them as well.

  3. look online for dealers that sell this model

they may even come and pick it up.

or the want ads in your local paper.

  4. I would advertise on craigslist.com  It is free and you can advertise for your local area so that you don't have to worry about getting it somewhere far away.  Also, you might look into an ad in your Thrifty Nickel.  That kind of ad wouldn't cost much to run for a few days.

There are plenty of people out there who would love to get that chair at a discounted price and put a little work into themselves.
