How to serve well in Volleyball?
Has it been a considerably long time that you have been trying to serve properly but all the ball does is to go into the net or out of bounds? Are you so frustrated with the whole thing that now you shy away from the ball when it is your turn to serve? Have
you entirely given up on this very essential volleyball skill?
Well, if the answer to all these questions is yes, then you have come to the right place because we are going to give you more than just a glimmer of hope. Follow what we tell you and in a few days time, you will have the serve that the opponents fear most.
The serve is the action that marks the start of the volleyball game. But if you limit its definition to that, you will not be able to capitalize on this precious skill. The serve can act as a devise through which your team can score points one after the
other. If a player has perfected the serve, he is able to make it very difficult for the opposing team to pick what he throws their way.
The uniqueness of the serve is the fact that it only involves one player and his skill to score a point. Therefore, it is all under your control. Once you learn to execute the serve properly, only an exceptional opponent can stop you from making points on
serves.
The right way to think about a serve is as an attacking device. You need to think about it as a weapon that you can manoeuvre to get your goal. This will open up new horizons for you as you will begin to see the serve as something with which you can direct
the ball and its speed as well. This will give you more control and confidence.
Once you change your mind set about the serve, you need to change your style as well. The foremost reason why serves fail to cross the net and fall on the net instead is because the server’s elbow is not high enough. The higher your elbow is, the higher
you will hit the ball and the more chances will there be that the ball crosses the net. One way to improve your serving style is to always hit the ball with your elbow level with your ear.
Now that we are done with the mindset and the elbow, we now come to the toss. As the rule with the elbow, the same goes for the toss. The higher it is, the better it is. If the ball is tossed high than you will make contact with it at a higher position that
will enable the ball to cross the net. On the other hand, if the ball is not tossed high enough, the contact with the ball will be made low that will cause you to lean forward and hit it in a way that will give the ball more altitude and less speed. This will
reduce its chances of crossing the net.
While serving, if the server is facing the target, it becomes easier for him to make an effective serve. His whole body should be aligned towards the player or spot where he wants to hit so that all his energy is focused on the action. Once this skill is
mastered, you can try out different variations.
That ends our article about things to watch out for while making a serve. Why don’t you try out our advice by taking a ball onto the court?
