  1. If you are startong to learn about "freqs" you need to do a little more homeowrk about radio in general. I am serious, it's out there.

If you want to talk on a CB radio (27 mhz band) look on Ebay, there ane hundreds of cheap, hand held units for CB.

To even think of modifying or making this VHF receiver (108 to 136 mhz) is ludicrous. The fequency range is not the same and you open a can of worms for yourself if you start monkeying around with something (high dollar) you have no idea of how it works. It will be time ahead for you to spend $20 on a handheld CB radio. Hppe this info gets you to thinking correctly.

  2. #1 - you cannot use aviation radio like a CB.  You can only use it in relation to aviation (airplane to airplane, airplane to ground, etc.)

#2 - You can use it to listen.

#3 - you do not have channel number.  You set the frequency.

If your dad is a pilot, you should know this (or he should know this).

    Good Luck...

P.S.  After 9/11 the FAA does NOT take infractions lightly.

  3. You can't. Operation and maintenance of ALL transmitting radio sets are governed by the Federal Communications Commission. Unless you hold an FCC 1st Class License, any changes you make to that radio will make you liable for fines up to $10,000 and/or 20 years in jail for each offense. Besides the illegality of what you want to do, the radio isn't capable of being switched to the CB frequency range.
