  1. if its XP, click "Start" -> Shutdown -> Standby

if Vista, click the Start button, and on the bottom right side of the menu, click the small black arrow, and choose "Sleep"

  2. In Windows XP

Click start. Click Shut Down. Click Stand By(only part of your PC will be functioning, thus saving power).

Click start. Click Shut Down. Keep shift button on your keyboard pressed. The stand by option will change to Hibernate(Selecting this will completely shut down ur pc. However the next time u switch it on u will find all ur applications and documents in the exact STATE as it was when u opted to hibernate.)

  3. In Windows XP:

Click Start > Shutdown, and then click on "Standby" Also on some laptops you will have to hold down shift for the "Hibernate" to change into standby.

  4. Years ago, I got the advise from a computer expert, never to set the computer in sleep mode. Either leave it on or switch it off.

When you do not use it for a couple of hours, but you know that you will use it again that day, leave it on. Set after how many minutes monitor has to switch off. When you do not use pc for the rest of the day, switch it off. but do not put it in sleep mode.

Can give problems when you want to start up pc again.

  5. In order to make your computer go to sleep mode auto you could right click on your desk top and select the properties and there you could set the sleep or hybernate tiem limit
