  1. wash it down once a week and make sure drainage is good in it and it washes away, and begin by adding healthy birds.

  2. Indoor or outdoor?

  3. You'll need to first start with healthy birds and get them all tested by your avian vet just to be sure they are free from communicable diseases.  Once you get them established feed the a good quality mixed diet and keep the aviary CLEAN.

In order to prevent the introduction of disease from new additions you'll need to have a separate quarantine room where all new birds will spend a minimum of 30 days (60 is better though) before being integrated into the main flock.  This way they can adjust to a new environment and you can keep them separate from your main flock while you wait for test results from the vet.

  4. It's not so much the set up, but how you take care of it.  All cages and aviaries need to be kept clean of droppings.  If it is an outside aviary, a concrete floor with some sort of drainage (even if it is just slope in the floor) makes it very easy to hose down and disinfect.  The cage itself needs to be hosed down, or pressure washed often.  If you have an inside aviary, it should have floor drains so that it can be hosed down or cleaned somehow often.  Keeping droppings and old food cleaned up is the key to keep disease away. Cleaning and disinfecting the perches and toys once a week, and doing the whole cage or aviary once a month is best.  If you have a bird that gets sick, remove it from the others and quarantine it til the vet can see it. Disinfect the cage immediately for prevention of spreading any illness.   Keep an eye on your birds at all times to make sure they are in good health. Please read my profile.
