i have vista in one and xp in the other laptop both have wi-fi ..

  1. both wireless cards need to support ad-hoc mode.

    then they need to be set to ad-hoc.


  2. I don't know much about Vista unfortunately.

    But changing this is fairly stright forward on XP.

    Under device manager, you need to change the advance options on the WLAN card to connect via a peer to peer mode.

    This will be different for each kind of WLAN card but attached is a link for a general rule about WLAN modes.
