How to set up my sand filter for my pool? which goes to pool first, pump or filter? please help...callie?

I don't know if the water goes to the filter first or to the pump first, and so I don't know the correct way to set up. and also how do i backwash - or do i even have to do that at set up? please help....callie

Your suction line goes to your pump first ( the front, not top of it) and then into the side of your filter from the pump top. Every sand filter set up is this way.. The multi port on your filter will usually have an opening that's marked "pump". This is where you connect the two. Where it says "return" is where it goes back to the pool, either through a heater, chlorinator, salt water generator or what have you
