Hi I need to set up my wireless router so i will have internet on the main computer and wireless, and i lost the directions. I currently use yahoo dsl for internet through a modem. So I have the ethernet cable running from the router to the modem, and then the cord that came with my router is connected to computer. Now my laptop is getting internet and the main computer is not...anyone know why this may be? Is it the way I hooked it up or could it have something to do with our internet service not allowing both at the same time?

  1. I bet you got the ports mixed up, that would cause the exact problem you described.

    1. Make sure the wire from the modem goes to the plug marked "WAN" "Uplink" or "Internet" on the router.

    2. Make sure the wire from the desktop goes to the "LAN" port on the router.

    3. Unplug both the router and modem for 10 seconds.

    4. Reboot the desktop computer.

Otherwise call the manufacturer of the router and they will help you fix it.

Technically, the internet service may not "allow" this in their terms-of-service (in other words they won't help you because they want you to pay extra for multiple computers) but it will work anyways because policy is seperate from technology.  That's why I suggest calling the manufacturer of the router, who will help you, instead of the ISP who will probably just say remove the router and there's no problem.  I'm doing this with Cox Cable and as long as I don't ask Cox for help everything works fine.  If Cox comes out to fix the TV or something they want to unplug my router but I just tell them it's working fine and they don't mess with it.

  2. Maybe try switching them.

    It should work.

Most routers have config utilities where you might be able to get info, what brand of router is it?

try opening this in a webbrowser:

    192.168.0.1

    192.168.1.254

See it the config thing comes up. Try on both, if the wired computer can get that and not internet that would be strange...
