I know that it's possible to build a wifi lan connection between two computers without the need for an access point. So, how can you link 2 computers with Wifi?

  1. its called an ADhoc network... your network cards need to be compatable with it (most are i believe) and go into your wireless settings and set it to search for computer and access points not just access points and then it will pick up the other computer...

  2. As mentioned, this is called "ad-hoc", or point-to-point.  There are actually two steps to do this:

Set up a wireless profile that uses ad-hoc.  You still choose an SSID code for your network and can enable some kind of authentication if you like.

When doing ad-hoc, you are responsible for manually setting up IP addresses; normally your router or internet gateway does that for you by acting as a "DHCP server".  In your network settings (possibly as part of your wireless profile), find the IP settings and instead of finding an address automatically (which is always default), use "static addressing".  Assign a unique address to each device, all in the same subnet range.  If you aren't familiar with these terms, try these values:

Static addresses to use: from 10.1.1.1 to 10.1.1.254

    Subnet mask (if asked): 255.255.255.0

Gateway/router: empty, unless one of the devices is

acting as a router to somewhere else.

DNS/Wins: empty (used for internet name resolution)

Experiment a little to find the best procedure.  Some mobile devices don't like to connect to an ah-hoc until it sees another device already using it.
