How to setup a privet network, Visa & Windows xp?

I have setup the computer that has windows XP (home) and set it to let me use the printer and files. I am lost on now how to set up the computer that has windows Vista (ultimate) to see the other computer, both are on a wires router (net gear) If i can do this without having to do anything to the router like i did before when both computer where running XP that would be great.. if you do know how to do this, please fully explain showing step-by-step on how to do so.. Thank you!

  1. Vista is supposed to be even more friendly than Win XP with networks.  What have you tried?


  2. Can you try running the XP Network wizard and have it make a setup disk?

    I've never successfully set up Vista file sharing but I was able to see my XP computers from Vista by running the network wizard on XP and going to Network in the Vista start menu.

    Sorry I can't be of more help.

  3. Hi,

    In vista i think you go to system properties and then theres a box in there with network in i think you have to click customise and then change the network name to the same as the xp computer then you should be able to see the other pc's. But i think as well somewhere you have to turn on network discovery in windows vista.
