How to sew a patch on a school bag ?

Hello everyone!

I'm a totally newbie to sewing (in fact i've never ever sew anything :p) but i'm willing to sew my own patch on my school bag.

I've already designed my patch on my computer (it is not circular or rectangular-shaped by the way) and I think of printing and then cutting the shape out from a piece of fabric but I have no idea how to sew the patch properly on my bag.

Any help would be great!

Thank you

  1. I'm not sure if your bag is plastic vinyl or cloth.

But you could use some wonder under and iron it onto the back of your material that you plan on using for the patch.  Then trace or cut out the design of your patch.  Then if the bag is cloth you can iron it onto the bag.  Then you can sew it on by hand.  If the bag isn't out of cloth you will still need to peel off the back paper and then try to hold the patch in place and still sew by hand or machine zig-zag stitch around the edges.  You should use an applique stitch, that is a decorative stitch.

Here is a search on how to sew by hand.

Hope you can understand this post and that i've helped you out.

  2. Just get some thread (not too short)  and a needle. put the thread through the needle pull untill nearly halfway through, tie a knot in the long end of the thread. start going in out around the patch..it doesn't matter if its messy (looks better that way i think), until you're finished. You can go around again to make it stronger too, tie a knot to finish it and cut off excess string....or else you could just glue it on with some really strong glue.
