Question:

How to sew a tutu?

I need to make it with an elastic waistband. How do I sew on the tulle so that the stitch won't defeat the purpose of the elastic so it won't stretch? Do I use a special stitch? Do I stretch out the elastic while I'm sewing on the tulle?

  1. Yes, of course, you stretch the elastic while sewing it.  You can also gather the tulle first to make it even fuller.  Also, use the longest and widest zigzag stitch your machine will allow.

I have seen a website for instructions on tutu making.  I don't know the address, so you'd need to find it through Google or Dogpile.  This was for adults' professional-style tutus, however, not for the kind kids wear for make-believe.  You may be able to learn some good things from it anyway, so I'd recommend looking it up.

  2. Don't sew the tulle TO the elastic, sew a casing in the tulle and thread the elastic THROUGH it - you just adjust the fullness evenly when the tutu's on.

Here's an extremely simple version with almost no sewing, if you can use this style.

    Good luck.
