Sorry I forgot to mention it is a ride-on mower. How can I get the blades off?

  1. I use an elect grinder...be sure to remove the blade first

  2. Have a neighbor sharpen them with a grinding wheel, saves more time in the long run.

  3. grinding wheel is easiest and get you a blade balancer so you will know you have both sides even weight or they will wobble and possibly come off,cut through the deck etc you can get them at lowes, home depot.ace etc

  4. Put the deck height at its highest setting.  This will give you better access to the blades.  Ride the mower over a low spot or up a ramp so that you will have even more room to work.  Then lay on your back and use a box wrench to turn the bolt counter clockwise while holding the blade stationary.

Now that you have the blades off, use a bench grinder or a hand grinder to restore the sharp edge.   Wear gloves and eye goggles for your protection.  Make sure to balance the blades.  You can buy a cheap tool from a hardware store to show which side of the blade is heaviest and then remove material from the heavy side.

  5. Are you talking about a cylinder mower or a flail or spinning disc all mowers you must insure they are in balance after sharpening if you run a diamond file along the cutting edge following the angle already set you must remove exactly the same amount of mettle from each cutting edge stroke the file along the entire cutting edge and move to the next till all are sharp If you do not manage to keep the blades in balance ti could be very dangerous

  7. Get a b*****d file and go to work. Better yet get an extra set and sharpen the dull ones in your spare time. Don't forget to balance them or you can ruin the spindels.
