Question:

How to shorten shaft?

by  |  earlier

I usually get my putters shortened by about an inch, but this time I thought I would save a bit of money and do it myself.

I know how to re-grip my own clubs and have done this a number of times, but how do you shorten the shaft. Is it just as simple as chopping the end off with a saw?

I would be grateful for any answers.

  1. i would use a pipe cutter for a much cleaner and accurate cut  all round.

  2. You can go to any golf store and then you can ask them how you can cut the shaft off.

Or you can surf on the internet.

I think you use a saw.

first you need to get the shaft alone, then mark the point where you want to end the cutting, then just do it

  3. Why shorten the shaft when you quite easily stick it in your tummy and use a pivotting technique for your putting. Alternatively stand a little taller to your puts.

  4. As long as you are talking about your putter, then by all means cut the inch off. However dont do it yourself with irons and woods as it will effect the stiffness of the shafts.

  5. Sounds as easy as that

  6. It is that simple.  Just take off the old grip, use a hack saw or a pipe cutting tool (better for an even level cut), then replace the grip and you are done.

  7. Dude, I hope you mean in a golf sense . . .

  8. shortening the shaft of a putter is no problem. you are not relying on the flex of the shaft so cutting from the top is fine it will change the swing weight of the club but it should not be too drastic and you will grow accustom to it quickly. all you need is a chop saw or if you have a pipe cutter it will do fine. If you want to shorten your irons that would be a different story, you would then be affecting the stiffness, swing weight, and bend point of the shaft.

  9. of course it's that simple (if you chop an inch off - your club WILL be an inch shorter)..... however it may not be the professional recommended method.

if you usually have it done - why don't you ask the people who usually do it.

beware though they might try to bamboozle you with technical jargon for the process that they do, so that you're scared about messing it up if you do it yourself - and therefore pay them to do it (whilst most probably they just remove the grip, saw an inch off and replace grip)

  10. I've built all of my clubs (including putters) and have built\fixed clubs for several others.

When cutting a metal shaft, you can use either a tubing cutter or a fine bladed hack saw. When using a saw, don't try to cut straight through the shaft, rather, cut around the shaft. This will give you a more even cut (I typically put a wrap of masking take around the area to be cut, then draw a reference line around it, to serve as a guide)

    .

It will probably surprise you how hard the metal is, but take your time, using smooth even strokes and you'll be through in no time. Clean up the end with a fine file or sanding block and you're ready to install the new grip.
