I just gave birth to a beautiful little boy and his biological father lives in Texas and I live in Michigan. He is willing to sign his rights off and allow my finance to adopt my son. What steps do I need to take to get this done? What will it cost? How long does it normally take? Will they allow my finance to adopt even though we are not married yet? Will my sons biological father have to come to Michigan to do this?

  1. I'm not sure the Texas laws, but you will have to get an adoption attorney to draw up the papers. If your ex is not going to contest it, then it should be easy. You will have to get him served where he is at, so cost might be a factor there. i am not sure about the adoption part if you are not married, but wouldn't you want to get married first? I mean, you are basically giving  parental rights to this man. Who knows what will happen? He can get complete custody of your son, he can pursue child support, amongst other things.. Once the adoption goes through, he is the father, and they will change the birth certificate and in all aspects he IS the father. I personally would make sure we were married first.

  2. hire a lawyer whom specializes in adoption.
