Ok, so i got my brothers regular skateboard out of the basement yesterday.

Its nothing fancy or anything, no name brands, and what not.

He got it for his like 8th Christmas, but its not that small.

I don't want to spend any money and get my own yet.

I just need some tips on how to control the board and get started with moving steady and smoothly.

One problem though. 1/2 my street it straight, but bumpy.

The other 1/2, flat and slanted.

  1. PRACTICE

  2. The answers you have so far are all very good. Practise is the main advise, and any of the Tony Hawk instructional videos and books are very good to. My advise is to find friends who sk8. Things may have changed since my sk8ing days back in the 80's, but it was thought that girls should not sk8. THAT IS TOTAL c**p. I would try to find fellow female sk8ers as they will properly be more willing to help you. Whatever you do HAVE FUN and BE SAFE.

  3. The Skateboard City site has lots of good info for beginners.

  4. go watch on youtube

when i first learnt to skate i watched this. taught myself, it's not that difficult. it's all about practice and it helps if you already know how to balance and are good at it (i was a ballet dancer for 10 years so i learnt good ballance)

for now just get used to pushing off and placing both feet on your board. don't try tricks until you're ready.

first you need to learn your stance. are you regular (your left foot to the front and your right at the back) or goofy (right at the front, left at the back). always start with your front foot always on the board, and push off with your back and then put it on the board when you've gained ballance. i know it sounds dorky but wear a helmet and enclosed shoes when youre first starting. don't go down the slanted road unless its not too bad, you may hurt yourself. if you have a smooth path just carve that. be prepared to hurt yourself, skating it pretty dangerous when you first start out so go slow and don't push too hard with force. if you really need help ask your brother or someone you know who skates.

  5. try to keep a good balance

  6. You practice every day. You will get better.

  7. just try to stay on the board on the bumpy part then when you can ride on the bumby part try to go on the slope

p.s. if you dont know this lean right to go right and left to go left :)

  8. practice at the park.

  9. helmets, knee pads, forearm pads and without them, A DARN GOOD HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN....because you'd need it. Enjoy

  10. just practice and you will get better and u can some other place to skate a place that has straight street

  11. just go on youtube and find tony hawks how to videos and learn how to ollie. once you master the ollie just go trick by trick the same way you did the ollie.
