How to slow down my horse?

I have a 15 y/o foxtrotter. Great little guy. Great under saddle just will not walk! Constantly gaiting. I don't want to keep on his face b/c he is so light in the bit, but otherwise he goes faster and faster. I tried going in the arena and turning tightly to one side, making a circle every time he went faster. He spun around so fast int he circle, pivoting on the one leg, that honestly I though I might fly out of the saddle. Is this normal? Should I continue this? I also tried when he goes faster pull, then release. I don't want to ruin this boy!

  1. half-haults..use them when he trots.. hold then release..hold release...you get the point:] everytime i have done this its worked so i hope it will for you!!!

  2. I would work on ground work.  Be able to stop him just by flicking the rope.  Get him to circle around you at a walk, and every time he changes gaits, ask him to change direction.  Eventually he will figure out that walking in one direction is way easier than gaiting in a bazzilion.  I always get off and fix a problem on the ground before getting back in the saddle.  With gaited horses that I have worked with, they do seem very much more forward, especially eager to gait. Does he have good ground manners to begin with?  I find doing 10 minutes of stuff on the ground really gets them ready to listen and calmed down enough to work. Good luck!

  3. hey tighten your upper leg and your lower leg and for last resort pull back on the back on your renis  do not let go!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and tiny circles work !!!!!!!

  4. try loungeing him before u ride him he might just be to excited and just want to run full out do that for about 15 mins first at the walk and then trot for a couple min and then canter of gallop if he is still doin hte rushing thing u can try lounging him for more time at a faster pace of try using a corection bit if u dont know what one is it has like a little c shaped indent in the middle and whn u pull it pop up in the roof of there mouth and it will get them to stop most of the time. hope i could help

  5. Im training my 3rd horse now...i have found that when they get rowdy, small circles work...not extremely tight circles, those get them more excited...also if he is pivoting, try a little bigger circle, not a lot bigger, maybe a foot or two bigger? Once he is walking, let him slowly get into a bigger circle...if he speeds up again, take him back in the the small circle & try again...

    Good Luck!!

  6. i ride a mustang that was like that .

what i would suggest is get him draw reins  or ruining reins that cause the horse to bring its head down and inward witch work as a emergency break  and while he speeds up just keep your hands in contact with the bit at all times and just half halt.

my other answer would be spend the money on a trainer

  7. hi i would suggest u that if u r not using a saddle try gentle pulling the horse hair and try to spend more time with it and just keep on making ur hand run on his total nose time and again this will make the animal to feel and to know u .
