Question:

How to smooth a cylinder top edges (border) in 3ds max?

Let's say I have a low-poly circular cylinder created in 3ds max, made up of only 12 or so lateral facets, in the form of a editable mesh or editable poly. I want to smooth the lateral sides, and I do it using Smoothing Groups (I do not want anything fancy like MeshSmooth or TurboSmooth). However, after I select the lateral faces and assign them to a smoothing group, the top edges of the cylinder (the top border of the cylinder) are still visible. The lateral side has no visible seams, but the top border doesn't look like a circle, but like a dodecagon (12 edges). How do I make it look like a circle? Thanks in advance.

  1. the best is to use mesh tool dear!

  2. Smoothing groups only changes the shading, not the geometry. so no matter what you do with the smoothing groups, viewing the cylinder from the top will always look like a 12-edge polygon.

if add the top and bottom polygons to the smoothing group of the other faces you'll get smoothed edges.
