The problem is z*8=z. it's the beginning of school and i'm having a total brain f**t. i thought you multiplied it by the reciprocal of something like that, but i can't seem to work it out. help!

  1. z * 8 = z  divide both side by z

    8 = 1       only possible answer is z = 0

  2. Isolate the variable - i.e. move all terms with the variable to one side, move everything else to the other.  Then factor and solve:

    8z = z

    8z - z = 0

    z(8 - 1) = 0

    7z = 0

    z = 0

    Are you sure you typed it correctly?

  3. I'm not sure if z*8 means "z times 8" or "z to the power of 8", so I'll solve for both cases.

    --------------------------------- ----------------------------

    z*8 (z times 8) - rewrite as 8z:

    8z = z

    8z - z = z - z

    7z = 0

    7z / 7 = 0 / 7

    z = 0

    ---------------------------------- ---------------------------

    z*8 (z to the power of 8)

    z*8 = z

    z*8 - z = 0

    z(z*7 - 1) = 0

    z = 0  or  (z*7 - 1) = 0

    z*7 - 1 = 0

    z*7 = 1

    z = 1

    So z = 0 or 1

  4. z*8=z                           the question

    z*8/8=z/8                     minus on both sides

    z=z/8                           end result

    hopefully that's what you wanted.

    you need to know another number before you can truely identify what z is
