Question:

How to sound-block a single room wall?

People on the other side of my wall have a problem with noise, so I was wondering if there was an aesthetically pleasing way to block the sound (or at least minimize it) from disturbing other people. Household items are best; pillows, blankets, etc.

Thanks!

  1. Egg cartons make a great sound barrier...use them like tiles.

Also, that scalloped egg-carton-ish foam, like you sleep on, works well too.  The thicker, the merrier.  Hanging up blankets or any cloth-like material will do in a pinch.

  2. Do you have speakers on the wall?  I had a problem with the connecting neighbors who hung speakers on the wall.  They moved the speakers so they were by their couch instead of on the wall and I have had no problems with the noise since.  It's the vibrations that go directly through the wall.  If it's a television making noise just move it a little away from the wall.

They do make foam that bounces the sound away from the wall.  It looks kind of like egg crate.

  3. You could also try hanging a thick rug on the wall. I've had one on a wall between my apartment and another to block out general household noise from their unit, and put one into my living room to avoid subjecting my neighbors to the occasional trash action film. Both have done wonders and look great. The rug behind the entertainment unit is particularly nice - it ends up looking a little like a big frame for the telly!
