How to speed up computer without special program?

my computer used to fast but not anymore, any suggestions on how to speed it up without another program? there is plenty of hard drive and i've already defraged the disk several times also there is i think 256mb ram

get CCleaner and firefox... after you get both of those get firetune (no instalation but the others are)

But seriously, go to add/remove programs, and remove all the things you dont use much, and that will speed it up pretty well, but firefox sucks, do not get firefox, will give you viruses and so so so so so many pop ups youll want to shoot the computer.

Maybe free up some space on your hard drive, or you could take it to someone who could clean out the dust in it.

With those specs you'll need a new computer if you want to keep up. If however, you want to keep it running best as possible without installing any programs or buying any additional RAM (which I highly recomend as most electronic stores can install it for you these days) then you're going to have to clean out your system resources.

First you should maintain the PC like with all the other suggestions. Delete programs you don't need. go in and get a anti-virus to scan and remove spyware and whatnot. However, the huge improvement in speed is going to come from getting rid of start up programs.

You didn't say what operating system you had, but if it is XP, then go to start -> run -> and type in 'msconfig' without the quotation marks. Its easy to remember as its essentially microsoft configuration.

DON'T play with anything but the tab at the top that says start up. Thats the only safe thing to mess with because it simply stops things from starting up with your computer.

Generally when you get a computer from a big company like Dell, HP, or whatnot, or when you install new programs, there is a lot of c**p that starts in the background and runs 24-7 with the computer sucking up computer resources. The idea behind this is that the program is already running in the background so it will be fast to start. This is of course contrary when all the programs are running at once because no program can start faster with all of them sucking down resources.

So go through and uncheck pretty much everything. The only things you want to leave checked are generally anti-virus or programs you prefer to start up with the computer like a favorite messanger or whatnot. Unfortunately sometimes the names are difficult to understand, but don't be shy. There isn't really any harm you can do in here as you can always go back in and check things back (just don't get out of the start up tab). If something bad did happen (because lets face it, technology doesn't always agree with us) simply starting in safe mode should allow you to get back in to have more trial and error with it.

You should notice an amazeing increase of speed and power once you've cleaned up the system resources.

Unfortunately you just need to realize that your pc's specs are to low now to keep up. When you bought it it would be fast, but now computers are more powerful so programs are allowed to be more bulky, which will make you seem unusually slow.

My first PC, from the late 90's had 60mb of RAM. Today I would cry if I had to use that. Keep in mind that Windows 98 could install in an area of 2-3 hundred megabytes. XP requires 2-4 gigabytes, and a good business class of Vista requires a whopping 14gigabytes of memory for just the initial OS install.

Still, clearing out the resources should help you get some more bang out of your pc for a while longer.
