You can't dial up is limited to 56k and in most cases is more like 45k. For the same price as most dial up you can get a much faster basic cable modem or basic DSL around $20-$25 and either of these will be 10-15 times faster.

Use a V.92 dial-up modem.

V.92 incorporates advanced compression protocols that will speed-up the dial-up process and some downloads, due to the compression algorithms used.

V.92 modems also incorporate the MOH feature (Modem on Hold), which allows you to take incoming phone calls while surfing (puts surf on hold while talking on phone).

Obviously, you won't get the same results as highspeed, but it will give you better performance than the old V.90 Standard.
