Question:

How to speed up the process of breaking in new ice skates?

Okay, yesterday I got my new skates, i got Riedells! I forgot what ribbon they are.. I think they might be blue. or silver, but anyway! Today at the ice skating rink i was skating for a long time, my skates were only hooked on the first 6 hooks, not the other two! Okay, so that made it feel like I had broken them already! But when i hooked up the last two they were as stiff as heck! That is really getting on my nerves and i want to be able to do my camel spin again so I wanted to know if there were any ways to speed up the process of breaking in my skates!!! all reasonable answers are acceptable!! Thanks in advance!

  1. i love ridells!

i would keep on those 2 other hooks.

how are you gonna break them in if you dont use them?

also walk around the house in your skates (with bladeguards of course)

and always put a bandaid on when you feel the beginning of a blister

  2. walk around the house in them and do lunges in the house and stuff

  3. Generally you want stiffness to prevent your ankles from flexing. The lower leg and foot should act pretty much as a unit. However, some break-in is needed. Just keep using them as often as possible; they'll get better.

Been there; I had custom skates made and went through this process; it takes time.

I envy you since I can't skate any more due to a shattered femur years ago from a skiing mishap.

  4. The best way to break them in is just by skating in them.  Lots of swizzles and crossovers.  Don't lace them all the way to the top until you've got the ankles creased a little.  Also, for added flexibility, skip lacing the last lace hole as well.  Once you're feeling comfortable with your skates then lace them normally.  Put your hard plastic guards on and wear them while you're watching TV.  It takes a few hours on the ice to get new skates broken in.  Being that they're from the ribbon series, your break in time should not be long.  Good luck!

  5. Umm yeah. You're not supposed to hook up your last two until 2 or 3 weeks. That's why it's so stiff.

  6. What I do to speed up the process is get my skates "baked" (you can get it done at the skate shop) it makes them so much easier to break in! Or you can stick a hair dryer in the boot! I've done that and it works great! After doing that, wear them around the house with your hard guards on, works like a charm! Just keep practicing with them!

    Hope I helped!

    Good luck with your skating!

  7. Some good things to do if you haven't already done this is to have them heat molded, wear them around the house with your gaurds on, or to lace them all the way up except for the last loop for about a week or two. Heat molding is done by a professional, don't just stick them in your oven because you will litterly cook your skates. Good Luck and remember sometimes it takes about a week to break in skates!

  8. I have the same kind of skates. They aren't too bad to break in. What I usually do whenever I get new skates is put them on at home with my guards on and just kind of walk around in them. That helps a lot. Then I would go for public sessions just to skate around with my friends or something. but don't actually practice anything. Also when you put them on bend your knees really deep that will help. Oh yeah and always lace them all the way up. It helps them get broken in a whole lot faster.

    I Hope That Helps.

  9. I was just as anxious as you so I put them on with the guards and just walked around my house with them on and it turned out to really help! Good Luck!
