Question:

How to split Rent?

I'm about to get a place with three other people, the rent will be $1300 not including utilities and such. I understand some people like to just split rent among people, which is unfair in the case of room sizes such as the master bedroom. I understand how all other bills will be divided equally but you just cannot divide rent by persons. Should rent itself be charged by person or rooms?

  1. devide by the people, room size shouldnt matter

  2. Personnally I think it is about the persons. However if you could figure it out you can charge by the square footage of space a person uses. I myself have the largest room in the house however, I also get paid the least and have offered the room to my other roomates who prefer to keep their own rooms. One of my roomates is male and living with his girlfriend but he insists on having the smaller room. I also generally stay in my own room and rarely use any other room except the kitchen. He uses his room, kitchen and living room so he utilizes more rooms than I do.

  3. You should discuss this with the people you are renting with and choose a way to split the rent that everyone agrees with.  There is no "best way", just do what's best for you and your housemates.

  4. split by persons

  5. Have each pay an equal percentage of their wages

  6. It should always be split by person, not by room.

  7. if one of the bedrooms is a lot bigger/nicer than the others I agree that person should pay a little more. if they have their own bathroom, a lot more!

i would suggest in your case $315. for 3 people and $355 for the one with the mastr BR

  8. I would have the person using the master bedroom pay a little extra because it balances out.  The use of a private bathroom & a bigger living space should be factored in, especially if the other tenants are sharing a bathroom.  I would split it as follows:

    Master b/d: $500

    B/d 1: $400

    B/d 2: $400

That's my best advice however, I didn't factor in things like assigned parking or garages- all of which affect the rent.  I would also strongly suggest you each sign the lease and have a written, legal agreement to the rent terms.  Utilities and such can be split 3 ways, but it's best to know (and REALLY trust) the people you plan on living with, it makes it soooo much easier.  Best of luck!

  9. Always split by the number of people.

  10. Have the person with the master bedroom pay an extra $100 per month

  11. There are several ways to do it.  However, you know you reached the correct answer when all 3 roommates are happy with the room they got and the price they are paying.  If all 3 arent happy the prices are wrong.

    1. Even splitting.

    2. Arbitriary prcing where 2 priced the same and 1 higher 500 and 400

    3. Calculate a number analytically using sq footage used by each person: See if you folllow.

    Master sweet is 10*22=220Sq feet

    Bed2 and bed3 140sq feet

Rest of the shared apt is 500

    therefore:

master has use of 720sq feet

bed2 has use of 640sq feet

bed3 has use of 640 sq feet

    (this totals 2000 used)

    therefore

    Percent to pay is (use/total)*Price

    master= (720/2000)=36%*1300=$468

master is 36% of rent or $468

    bed2 and bed3 are 32% or $416

Solution 3 is nice becuase it is less arbitrary.  However, until 2 roommates would rather pay less and get worse room your price is incorrect.
