How to spot a hermit crab?

recently i went to the beach with my friends and we were playing in the water.Then my friend saw something moving in the sand and she dug it up and found a hermit crab.The thing is i don't get how to find one.Can anybody or anyone tell me how to find a hermit crab?

It's easiest to find them in shallow water.  They are in a sea shell.  Sometimes it just looks like a seashell, but if you are patient and just look, you will she the shell move.  We take a bucket, fill it up with the water from the Gulf, then the kids catch the hermit crabs.  Of course we release them before we go home as they can only live in salt water.  They love it..
