How to stack my 3 surfboards on a normal roof rack of a car?

Usually I wouldn't do this, but this time on my trip I don't have enough room inside my car. So.....it's a normal roof rack......I have to get three boards on top (6'.....6'2".....and a 6'8").......

I'm always very worried about my boards everytime I travel, so I really want that they stay up there safely and firmly.

How should lay them up there? How should I tie them up? With what should I tie them up? Should I lay something in between them? If yes, what and how? How do I protect nose and tail?...........I need fast and exact answers please!!

  1. i would stack the biggest on the bottom (obviously) wrap the parts of the boards that are touching with large towels. extra security i'd use ratchet straps. point the nose of the board towards the front of the car with the nose goin more down in line with the windshield. it will help make it areo dinamic (help prevent from the nose busting) as far as the tail of the boards, the wind should just blow over it. i wouldn't worry about damage.

  2. put the 6'8 then the 6'2 then 6' and make sure you pull the rope as hard as possible also put fins in the back and the wax will help stick to the pads on the roof.

  3. Stack them upside down largest on bottom (fins up).  put some towels under and between them, (or I use pool noodles torn in half lengthwise twice--ie about 2 feet long and a half circle of the pool noodle at the front and back.)  Stack the next longest board upside down on top and the final one upside down on top of that.  Nose toward the front of the car, tail toward the back.  You shouldn't need any nose or tail protection, but if you feel it's necessary, just wrap a towel around that area.

Use some cinch or ratchet straps  to tie them down.  Cross over all three boards with one loop, don't try to tie them separately.  Protect the boards from the ratchets/buckles with some towel or something.  I actually have cinch straps with a rubber boot thing around the buckle that keeps it from digging into my gear.
