Talk to your or their local bank to set up the fund. This way people realize it is real and not a scam. As funds are given to the bank, not you, others, etc.

Then email/call the news and ask them to do a short clip about the donations. Post an add on Craigslist about the donations. Make a short 1 minute video about it and post it on YouTube. Put signs on tin/coffee cans and place in local convenient stores, etc. Ask grocery stores if you can set up a table and collection item outside their store on certain days, etc. Talk to the local churches, not to give, but to spread the word to the congregations. Have the schools where the kids go do donations drives, and such, talk to the teachers.

If you have pictures, use them as most can't say no to you if you show them a picture of the kids and such. To just speak, anyone can say no. The pictures hits the emotional side.
