  1. Manual transmission vehicles seem to be very difficult to master at first, but once you get the hang of it,  they are great to drive... and a lot less boring then automatic transmission vehicles.  Prior to turning the ignition key, make sure your foot is firmly pressing the clutch pedal all the way to the floor...  you MUST keep this pedal to the floor unless the car is in NUTURAL...it will stall out otherwise.  When you feel it is time to move forward OR backward..lets say you are in Nurtural...you put your foot on the clutch and shift the car into first gear...with a standard 4  or 5 gear shifter on the floor, the shift pattern is an "H" with first gear at the top left of the "H" pattern... but clutch in with LEFT foot, push shift k**b toward the LEFT and UP, let go of shift k**b,  SLOWLY bring foot off of clutch while at the same time, slowly putting your foot on the gas pedal and slowly pushing down... your left foot should come off the clutch pedal in at the same speed your right foot is pushing down on the gas pedal....  now you should (hopefully) be moving forward... LISTEN carefully to your car,  the engine will basically let you know by it's sound when you need to shift again... it takes practice to be able to HEAR when the car needs to be shifted and the only way to get that practice is to drive.. and hopefully not strip the gears...  just be careful.. with practice you can do it.. Oh and shifting into reverse is different if you have a 4 speed transmission or a 5 speed transmission.... on a 5 speed transmission (5 gears to shift into), you shift to Nutural (center of the "H" then HARD to the right beyond the boundry of the "H" and then straight down.  Once again, practicing with the feet coordination is essential...  good luck.... it takes lots of patience ....(mostly on the part of your driving instructor).

  2. over rev the engine as you pull off in 1st gear, but release the clutch nice and easy.

if in doubt, or about to stall, just ram your foot on the clutch, its not going to speed up, just controls it.

  3. Put the brake on,turn you same foot so your ankle will hit the gas, when ready.Push the clutch in,with your other foot.Put it in gear,if not already, release the parking brake if on,turn the key,it will start.Slowly push on the accelerator with your heal while at the same time letting off the brake as you simultaneously are slowly letting the clutch out all the way.the car will move without having the clutch out all the way,so be aware.once the car starts moving release the brake  completely.make sure you keep the accelerator pushed or it will stall, and do not let out on the clutch pedal fast.

  4. push the clutch in and hold the brake, and turn the ignition on, or just throw it up in neutral and hold the brake until it starts, then push the parking brake until your ready to go.

  5. If you're asking on how to just start the car, it's pretty easy. Check to see that you're in neutral and depress the clutch (just to play it safe), insert the key into the ignition, turn it forwards and press the gas pedal.

Now, to actually drive a standard is another matter altogether. This does take patience, coordination and skill. You can begin by practicing shifting gears (with the ignition off) just to get the feel of this. When driving, you're likely going to over rev the gas or stall the engine a number of times until you get the feel of things.

Start slow - press the gas down a bit to speed up. When you hear or feel the car over-revving, it's is time to shift. Depress the clutch (with your left foot) and release the gas (with your right foot) simultaneously. Shift gears with your right hand. Find yourself a nice large empty parking lot and practice, practice, practice.

Keep working at it - mastering a standard shift can add so much more excitement to driving.

  6. Have the battery and ignition checked if the car doesn't stay running after it's started. You might want to invest in a tune up too, maybe the spark plugs are bad.

  7. push the clutch in an start.

  8. If you mean a car with a manual shift transmission, you should start the engine with the transmission in neutral, or just push in and hold the clutch pedal (even if it's in gear) and start it that way.

  9. You get in your car, and then you step on the clutch, then you turn the key, but keep your foot on the clutch, then you just stick it in gear one and off you go.

  10. well the best way is by using the clutch. there is 3 pedal, rigth one, middle one, and left one. the right one is your clutch, the middle one is the brakes, and the right one the gas. to start a manual car you always have to push on the clutch all the way down and turn on the key. it will actomatically the car will start.

  11. push down the clutch peddle, and brake peddle and put the car in neutral, then start the car with the clutch peddle down, otherwise it wont start. i know how to drive stick shift too (manual) theres a lot of things you have to learn by experience moreso.

  12. The easiest way is to slowly release the clutch until you can feel the car wanting to move.  At the same time, slowly press the gas petal a bit to keep the car from stalling.  Once you have accomplished that slowly release the clutch the rest of the way giving it a bit more gas to go.

    Hope that helps.

  13. where to start!

start your car in neutral (handbrake should be on)

leev ur handbrake on, put ur left foot all the way down on the clutch and put it in first gear. leeve it there... SLOWLY put ur right foot down on the gas/accelerater until you're revving a TINY bit (watch the rpm - shouldn't really be REVVING so much). HOLD IT THERE...  then SLOWLY bring your foot up from the clutch... u will FEEL like the WHOLE car 'lift' (keep an eye on the front bonnet and u will be able to SEE)... FREEZE right there.

    put handbreak down.

then very slowly release the clutch and you will be moving slowly cuz of the other foot that is on the gas... when releasing the clutch do it in three stages... release about an inch and freeze for half a second, do it again, freeze half a asecond and then again... while releasing the clutch you CAN put more pressure on the accelerater to go faster.

it just takes PRACTICE... keep practising.

that 'lift' is called 'the biting point'... u reely can feel and see it if you concentrate!

I live in England/UK and have been driving for 5 years, in my 24 years of living (lol) i've not known anyone drive an automatic car and i have NEVER EVER heard of starting the car with your foot all the way down on the clutch!! i mean WTF is that????? If you did that the instructors would kill you!! COASTING is when you are driving in neutral and your foot is all the way down on the clutch, this makes you lose conrol of the car, basically anything you do when u are at this point wont help cuz the care is doing its thing! (sorry i dont know the mechanic terms about the brake plates and all that!)

  14. You start it like you would any other car. To get it into first, hold your foot on the clutch and move the gear lever into first. Then start driving. However, if you don't know how to drive a manual, you should get an automatic. It's probably not to safe to drive a car you do not know how to use properly. Good luck!

  15. You will get used to it.  Don't get to frustrated..

  16. The most important thing in driving a manual is knowing your clutch.

I suggest get someone to take you to an empty parking lot.

Put it in first and don't bother with the gas.  You should slowly be able to let the clutch out and it should start to SLOWLY roll.  As long as its flat.

When you find that point where it starts to roll but almost stalls, hold it there until you get going fast enough to completely let it out.

This will teach you where your clutch pressure point is.  Once you do this a couple of times, start adding a lil bit of gas.  A little bit.  If you have a tach ( RPM gauge) you shouldn't really rev it above 1500 maybe 2000.

Most important thing is knowing your clutch.

  17. practice driving without using the gas peddle it will help you get use to easing the clutch and not bunnyhopping. also try taking off in second gear instead of first. Sometimes the gear ratio of first is so low that it tends to make you jump ahead and then you drop the gas and it is like hitting the breaks. You can actually get all the way to 5th without touching the gas and get use to the clutch

  18. put the key in the ignition put the car in gear yup thats it lol

  19. make sure its in neutral and then turn on the ignition - if in doubt put your foor on the clutch while starting it

  20. let out on the clutch until you feel it grab when that happens the car will start to creep forward.  just keep the rpm's up a little bit higher than it runs at idle.

  21. When you are about to start a manual car, Press the clutch and the brake at the same time. make sure that the gear is in Neutral. Then, turn the key and when you put it in gear, let go of the clutch slowly until you get more experience.

  22. hit the gas a little bit and let off the clutch real slow, try starting on a downward slope so that the car is already moving

  23. It becomes more of a feeling than anything else.  Just remember, you have to keep the engine "turning" fast enough not to die.  Let out the clutch a little until it begins to "grab".  This will "drag" the engine down a little.  The trick is to give it enough gas to keep it running without over-revving.  Practice makes perfect.  Just keep trying.
