i was just wondering if anyone had an tips on how to start a paranormal society, or group etc. right now i could only start it on myspace, and i doubt anyone would join and what i could do. none of my friends believe in the paranormal except one, and she's a downright scaredy cat. she'll here a tiny little tap and go, "omg, did you here that? what was that? omg can you go look to see what it was?"

i can't really go around to peoples home that are haunted yet, cause im only 13 (thats going to put some of you off, i know) and plus i dont have anyone to do it with. i have a huge interest in the paranormal and it'd be really awesome if someone could give me some tips on how i could start a paranormal society!

  1. I tried last year to start a paranormal society at my school. But my friends don't take it seriously and also there afraid of the paranormal.I don't know if this could work but you could post posters around your school, neighborhood, and on the Internet about your paranormal group, and maybe you might get some members.Good Luck!!!!

  3. When I was 12 (a year younger than you are now), I started a ghost-hunting club with my friends at school. We didn't do much in the way of actual hunting, but we did have a lot of fun creeping each other out with stories and magic tricks (of the stage variety). This eventually led me to an apprenticeship with the International Brotherhood of Magicians, which I stopped doing later to become a real ghost hunter.

In general, all you really need for ghost hunting is a flashlight, a notepad, and a pen or a pencil. Then read up on it! There are lots of great places to look online (remember that Google is actually your friend for looking stuff up) in order to find out about the different kinds of ghosts, etc., and being that you're 13, you'll pick up on it easier than you will when you get older (trust me, the older I get, the harder it is for me to learn).

Once you know a little, you can then put up a poster at school (once you're at school, ask the principal's permission). Get a sign-up sheet going for an "extra-curricular ghost-hunting club" so that they know that you're interested in this. You'll have a few of the stupid kids sign up along with the good ones, but once they realize that there might be actual work involved in studying paranormal stuff (which, you have to admit, kinda creeps most people out), they'll leave. If they try to make fun (which they probably will) just ignore them. If you don't get one of these, you're LUCKY!

Once you have at least one other person (ideal is 3 other people, plus you), you can then find a parent (yours or someone else's) to help you find a real paranormal investigator in your area to come and talk to your group, kinda to help guide you. Mostly, these are good people and very smart about the ghost stuff.

To help you out, I've given you some links to help you read up on ghost stuff. The TAPS web site is a great resource if you're just starting out (no, I'm not a member of TAPS). So, the links below in my "sources" section include lots of links to them. Also, Jason Hawes has a teenage daughter who's apparently something of an expert, so you might ask about that in the forums.

EDIT: I'd start with the school anyway. At the very least, you'll find out whom you can talk to if there's something actually really cool happening someplace. Community boards are a good place to get adults, and most kids are going to ignore those (and most adults will be put off by your age). Local shops might work, if they appeal to teenagers who aren't all "girlie girls". In particular, some of the goth-type stores (or even an emo-type store) might get some results.

    Glad I could help. :-)

  4. The most important things are knowledge, professionalism, experience, and sympathy. The people you are forming a team to help, really do need help, not just some kid who watches taps and thinks they can do it to (not talking about you, persay). A good paranormal investigating team is just that a research team, not "ghost hunters". Anybody can "hunt" ghosts but it takes a really knowledgeable person to actually research the paranormal. If you plan on walking around waving an emf detector and snapping pictures, i would just join a real team and get some experience first. Pick up the book "The Ghost Hunter's Guidebook" by Troy Taylor. That's the best one I've ever read on the subject of becoming a paranormal researcher. And good luck!
