  1. Set up buckets for waste that is recycled in your area.  Our area does newspapers, magazines, plastics, soda cans, glass and tin cans.  Make a weekly stop at the recycling center a priority.

Join the local Freecycle.org group in your area and post things you no long want/need/use.  I've gotten rid of an old sofa, scrap metal and an old sink which would have ended up in the landfill otherwise.

Think about your water use.  Install low flow shower heads and take shorter showers.  Showers instead of baths.  Turn the water off when brushing your teeth.  I don't know about the hand wash vs dishwashers for sure but my feeling is for the amount of dishes my family creates, my dishwasher uses less water.

Do only full loads of laundry.  Dry in the dryer until 1/2 dry and hang clothes on hangers to finish.  Hang bedding, rugs, etc outside to dry.  Use cold water wash when feasible.

Unplug cell phone chargers and the like when not in use.  Turn off computers at night.  Turn off TV, lights, radios, video games when not in use.

Also, think about donating used blankets, rugs, old towels to the local animal shelters.  They always need bedding for the animals.

Take one step at a time and feel good about your accomplishments!  Every item that is recycled instead of ending up in the landfill is a help!

  2. Thank you for making the wise decision to start recycling. It will help me so much. You should contact your city's trash services for specific details in your area. You will be amazed at how much trash you can keep out of landfills, and you will feel so good doing it!
