How to stay safe when going to a stranger's home to buy a used appliance?

I'm going to see a used appliance that I am looking to buy from a stranger that had a listing on craigslist. He emailed me back saying that we can test its function in the basement where it is stored, so that if I didn't want it then he wouldn't have to lug it back down again. Got any tips for staying safe while doing this? My boyfriend is going with me, but are there any precautions we should take?

  1. I would bring along a pocket knife and have 911 on speed dial just in case the cholo tries anything funny

  2. Just be aware of your surroundings.  Take a silent inventory of other people present at the house and notice where all your exits are.  If something doesn't seem right to you, just say you changed your mind and high tail it out of there.  I've dealt with several people from Craigslist without any problems -- although I too was slightly nervous.  I would never go alone, but if your boyfriend is going you don't have much to worry about.  It is also a good idea to let someone else know exactly when and where you are going -- give a family member or a friend the name, phone number and address of the man's house you're going to.  Give them a call before you go and afterwards as well.

  3. hes probably afraid of you and will have a baseball bat or golf club hidden in his basement in case you try to rob him

  4. i wouldn't stress, especially if your boyfriend's going with you.  you're acting like you live in a hamper.

  5. my tip is to talk to the  people next door and ask if the seller is ok or not

  6. You'll have company...just keep your eyes open and watch the guy's mannerisms. Follow him and keep him in front of you.

  7. Take a cell phone and take not just the boyfriend, but another friend or parent with you.  There is safety in numbers.  Good luck.  And I'm proud of you for thinking ahead of time!

  8. ya bout that, be armed

  9. You should be fine with your b/f.  Let someone else know where you are going and how long you'll be gone
