Okay, I make all of my daughers food, and have always used a steamer since I had it on hand at my old house, it belonged to someone else.

Anyways, I read you can use a colander instead of a pot, but the only one I have is plastic..Could this release any harmful chemical into her food I'm steaming for her? Anyone else know of a good way to do it instead of using a steamer or colander? I also don't have a cookie rack or I would use it...

  1. The plastic will melt.

Bamboo steamers are cheap and a good investment.

Use a couple of plates. Place the food on one and invert another over the top and place on top of the pot.

    Note.

The plates will get hot, so select plates that are heat friendly.

  2. Plastics do NOT release any harmful chemicals into the foods, unless you happen to melt them into the food.

How about do you have a microwave?? I put foods in a glass bowl and cook for about 5 minutes without seasonings, water or anything else in the micro. Cover with lid or plastic wrap and jab a hole for venting in it.

Your daughter needs to experience real life as well as your ultra sanitized version of it or she will start to be really ill when taken out into public.

  3. Uhh, sorry to burst a top contributor's bubble, but plastics do indeed leach dangerous chemicals into foods if the plastic has been heated past the point of what's recommended and/or if the plastic container has been used and it's bubbled and/or cracked on the inside.

The best way to steam w/o a steamer is to put the items in a glass bowl with a little water and then cover with a paper towel and cook in the microwave.  Or, you could just go to the store and buy a pot and lid that is designed for steaming.  They're really not that expensive and easy to use.

  4. Don't use the plastic colander in boiling water. I put my items in a microwaveable dish with a tiny bit of water. Microwave on high 2-3 minutes, then drain through colander to remove excess water.
