How to stiffen a handkerchief?

  1. Spray starch. There are a few different ones, some are stiffer than others. You can get it a grocery stores.


  2. Just how "stiff" do you want it?  

    If you just want it a little stiffer, you can use fabric starch (spray or liquid) before ironing it.

    If you want it really stiff (usually for crafts, etc, making "ghosts," etc), you can saturate it with various things, shape it over various forms if you want, then let dry... like:

    1. Aleene's Stiffener, or "Stiffy" (another brand name, I think)... find these at fabric stores or craft stores

    2. a permanent white glue (like Elmer's GlueAll, etc.) thinned with water, or various brands of decoupage medium

    3. sugar syrup (half sugar, half water... boiled till dissolved)

    4. you can use starch of various kinds, like Vano/etc, but those won't ever get as hard as 1-3
