Question:

How to stop a 4 month old kitten sucking my fur blanket?

I have a lovely fur blanket on my bed not as a decoration but to keep us warm.

But the problem is my 4 month old kitten keeps kneading sucking the fur.

It is a king size blanket too so it has to be taken away to be cleaned professionally. and I'm sick and tired of his wet spots from sucking.

i have tried hissing at him kicking him off the bed and of late i have turned the blanket over so that the fur side is down but soon as he sees fur he's at it.

can anyone please give some suggestions?

  1. AWWW!! he thinks it's his mother, cant you buy him a little fur blanket of his own??

  2. Most cats who knead and suckle were taken from their mother too soon.  Kneading while nursing causes the milk to flow and kittens who weren't weaned properly never learned they don't have to do it in order to eat. It's also a comfort thing where they are reminded of being with their mother. It's actually impossible to stop it. Try giving the kitten his own blanket or a small stuffed toy to suckle. Please don't be mad at the kitty. He's doing a natural thing and isn't trying to be annoying.  I have a 6 week old I rescued last week and he does it while drinking from his water bowl. If you really can't stand it, keep the kitten in a different room so he doesn't mess up your blanket.

  3. Aww my kitty does this too. He's 2 now though! Yeh it's something that kind of sticks with them once they start doing it. It reminds them of suckling from their mum. I just try to avoid letting him on my blanket, fold it in half and have him sleep on the other side of the bed. There isn't much you can do really, sorry.

  4. you cant stop it, face it you got a pet and this is just one of the many problems/ challenges that we all face with owning cats/dogs/horses etc

all my store bought cats do it and yes it exactly because of what the 1st answerer said, from being taken away too early.

i have a stray that was pregnant, she had 3 kittens, we sold 1 and kept 2 so we have 6 cats and the kittens of the stray dont know how to "paddle" the tence their paws when their laying on us but they just dont paddle and suck like our other 3

if you want her to stop, just dont use a blanket with fur, use a doona! lol
