How to stop a puppy from peeing in her crate??

We have had her now for about 4-5 weeks. She just showed up one day and we believe that she is about maybe 2 months old and we think she is a beagle. We have been keeping her in the house and she goes in a crate when we leave for work and at night. During the day, she is in there for about 4-4 1/2 hours and then about 6-8 hours at night. She goes out right before she is put up and let out as soon as someone gets home. I do not know when she is doing it, weather it be at night or during the day. She is in a pet taxi that is only enough room for her to turn around and lay down so therefor she lays in it because she does it on the towel I have in there for her to lay on (I believe). I have to wash her, the crate and towel about once a week. Leaving her in a room free is not an option because I also have a 2 year old Chihuahua and he is crate trained with no problems and would be unfair to him if she is able to roam free. I am not going to get her a larger crate and an actual bed until this stops. I feel I cant scold her for it since I'm not catching her in the act. We are at our wits end and don't know what else to do. I don't mind keeping her because she plays so well with our other dog. Her urine also smells like ammonia, very strong.

  1. you really can't, they can only hold it for so long. What i would do is set a timer on your phone or something then take her out or put her on wee-wee pads. While she pees say go pee then when she does give her a treat and praise her like crazy. You have to try though because maybe her previous owner had not trained her at all. Also if this helps try ehow.com and type in how to house break a dog. Or if this does not help  try training classes.

    Good luck

  2. I agree you are keeping the puppy in the crate too long. Make arrangements for someone to take her out. or get a larger crate where you can put papers in one spot or get gates and keep her in a contained are where she can use some papers that you have put down and shown her that they are for her to urinate on. She needs to have a spot that is clean to lie in. Anything else would be cruel and she will never learn to go on the papers. She is a different dog then the chihuahua and has different needs.

  3. Put her food in there.  Dogs don't like to mess where they eat.

  4. i know exactly what to do!!! hahaha same thing with me!!!! like i have this chihuahua that is like 6 years old but shes never been trainded until i got her when she was like 2. but then we moved into a new house and put her in her own little space with a cage and she never poops or pees there cuz thats where she sleeps unless its a total emergency and this is what you should do. put newspaper in the cage not a towel cuz my other dogs p**p on thier towels anyways then at night or whenever your not home put her in the cage and let her sleep there and everything and when your home leet her out then back in after shes done her stuff and play with her feed her and take her back out then back in and when its time to sleep put her back in the cage cuz its like how do i put this normal or ummmmmmm instincts for them not to go where they sleep. hpe that helps.

  5. Have you taken her to the vet to check for a UTI? Most dogs will not mess their crate unless they can not help it. I think a urine and parasite check (p**p du jour) to the vet is in order. Most of those sort of accidents are caused by infections (bacterial or parasitic).

  6. Oh My!  Your dog is in the crate too long!  You only wash her once a week although she is weeing all over herself?  Shame on you!  Throw away the towel and get a new one.  Figure out when she is doing it.  During the day, or at night?  Is she getting enough exercise?  Is she weeing for attention?  You need to put her in her crate for a short amount of time.  1/2 hour to start.  then take her out and let her wee.  Lots of praise when she goes to the bathroom where you want her to.  Gradually increase the time.  Most dogs intuitively don't defecate where they sleep, so she is unusual.  You need to get her checked by the vet, make sure she doesn't have worms, parasites, stones, bladder infection.  Get her spayed.  The vet can also give you more suggestions.

If she is house trained to a doggy door, and you have no problems, then by all means let her roam free.  Dogs are not people (duh)  Your chi is not going to think "Well, this sure sucks.  Why am I in my crate?"  No.  Your chi will be sleeping, warm and comfy and clean.  My schnauzer and shih tzu are allowed on the couch, but my aussie is not.  Do the dogs argue or complain?  No.  Because those are the rules.

  7. She's being crated for too long.

At two months old, she can only hold it for about 2 hours.  On top of that, she's spending half her life in the crate.  That's not exactly fair or good husbandry.

  8. First off it sounds like this pup is way too young for you to crate without accidents happening for that long a period of time.

First i would suggest that you pick up the water bowl about 2 hours before crating her and make sure she goes out to pee before crating her as well.

I would not put anything in the crate for her to lay on so that if she does do it she will soak herself, no dog likes laying in their own urine, but I`m sure the poor dog just can`t simply hold it anymore.

Perhaps you can get a neighbor or a kid from your neighborhood to at least let her out once every 2 hours.

    Good luck and god bless
