Question:

How to stop adult thumbsucking?

My boyfriend is 22 and still sucks his thumb. (Not outside of the home). He has already had to have his jaw re-aligned once due to sucking his thumb. It doesn't bother me that he does it, but the dental issue is a big one.

He says that he needs it to go to sleep at night too. He doesn't do it in public and says that he doesn't even feel anxious when he can't. Which leads me to believe its just a matter of habit.

Do any adults have any suggestions on ways to get him to break the habit so he doesn't ruin his teeth?

  1. Well, the 22 year old thumb sucking situation should be taken care of immediately! not only is he too old for it, but when he sucks his thumb, the bacteria from his thumb can get into his mouth. like cavity decays the teeth, this can also decay the teeth but even worse, mess up his tongue! the bacteria can vary from many things and therefore you never know what goes into his mouth. there is a specific bacteria from wooded areas, that if infects your tongue, it may result in him having to get rid of his tongue forever. i've seen it happen to a couple people in my life. they now walk around with a piece of their tongues missing!! also if you're kissing him, this bacteria may even latch on into your mouth. consult a dentist asap.
