How to stop baby from turning on hot water?

Hi my friend's son is 20 months old and he keeps going into the bathroom and turning on the hot water in the bathtub. I'm worried he will burn his hand someday. Is there any type of safety device that you can put on it so he can't turn it on? And locking the bathroom door is not an option cuz he's potty training.

  1. got to toys r us they should have covers for the k***s. but the way i stopped my kids was by putting on the water (warm water of course so they don't actually get hurt) and telling them HOT. don't let him see you turn on the cold or he'll figure it out cause kids aren't dumb, but if they know that's where the water is coming from and you tell them its hot it might work like with my kids

  2. Your friend needs to turn down the temperature on her hot water if possible - does she have a hot water cylinder with a thermostat on it? Not only will it then be safe, it'll save her money :)

  3. As a mom of 4, I have been there, and its scary.  There are products you can buy to prevent little ones from turning the faucet but nothing ever seemed to be made for my faucet.  Your friend should definately have a thing installed, if she doesnt have one already, that allows you to change how hot the water can get so that it could never get to a dangerous temp.

Somehow, he needs to understand what hot is and maybe either you or your friend should allow him to turn the water on, once -under close supervision of course.  When he touches it, be there to help him take his fingers away quickly and turn off the water (freak out even so hot water scares him even more), give him some ice (even though he wont really need ice), and use the word hot a lot, so he understands the relationship between the word hot and the sensation of touching the water.  It worked for all of my children, afterall we do learn from out mistakes.

That should deter him from playing with the faucet, or anything you say is hot, from that point on.

  4. take care of ur d**n kids... sheesh!

  5. Well, does he go to the potty by himself? If not, then you should lock the door. I would much rather clean up a little bit of pee or p**p than spend my day in the ER for a serious burn.

  6. maybe someone should watch him an not let him go to the bathroom alone

  7. Is there an easy way to access the panel?  Usually it's located in a closet. Then you can  just turn the hot water off and then just turn it on when you need it.

  8. I agree with the first person. Keep an eye on him when he goes to the bathroom.

  9. use the door k**b guards over the handles then he cannot turn them.
