How to stop cat from scratching door?

We live in an apartment, I have 2 cats. One behaves well and we dont have to worry about, the other will knock over garbage, get into the plants, OPEN my daughter's bedroom door...So we have to lock them both in the laundry room at night. The box and food is in there. Recently my trouble maker has started scratching the door in the middle of the night. He scratches SO much that he has ripped the paint of the d*mn door! We've made sure the food and water is stocked before they are put in there. We have tried correcting it by swating him, spraying him with water and ignoring the behavior, in hopes that he'd stop if he didnt get attention. I'm at the end of my rope. Does any one else have suggestions?

  1. Take an orange or lemon, or any other citrus fruit and rub it over the area the cat is scratching, cats hate citrus fruits! Also an orge skin in a flower bed a cat likes to pee in will put them off also.  Try rubbing the juice of an orange and see what happens.

  2. Put some air freshener sprayer that sprays automatically every ten minutes by the door. Cats hate the smell of air freshener. Or if you know something that they dont like put it by the door hope that this helped.

  3. let the cat out.

  4. Haha, i have a cat just like yours, his name is Einstein, and he gets into EVERYTHING... You should get him declawed..my cat still try's to claw at the doors, but at least he'll stop scratching everything

  5. Get some double sided tape and put it on the scratching area. He won't like touching the sticky stuff. Do they have a proper scratching post in the room?

Don't have him declawed, it's horribly mean and takes a bone from the tips of his kitty fingers leaving a painful pressure the paws when walking. Just cause cats seem kinda ok after declawing it's widely know that cats hide their pain very well. Would anyone want the tip bone of their fingers cut off?

  6. Mostly likely he just doesn't like to be locked up in the laundry room. And that is why his behavior continues. Keep ignoring him while he scratches. It's a way for him to get your attention. Place cat toys and a scratching post/rug in the room so he is not bored. Now for the door, to stop him from scratching it place a thick plastic (preferably clear) board where he scratched the most. This should lessen the satisfaction of scratching to him because he can't get directly to the door. :3
