I am writing for my brother and his g/f, they have 5 cats, 4 male and 1 female, two of the males keep peeing everywhere, including books and even the sofa, they have tried things to clear up the smell which haven't worked and things to stop the cats doing it which again havnt worked, the smell is so bad that they are virtually living upstairs to escape the smell and have said if they carry on like this then they will get rid of the cats, i was just wondering if anyone has any advice i could give them??

  1. Your vet will tell you to get them all fixed, and that you should have at least one litter box per cat. Yes I know that they will probably all use each others boxes but this is to give them more options. Also the boxes need cleaned daily! More then anything there probably are not enough boxes in the house, so the one or two are getting dirty and smelly faster then they can keep up with cleaning them. Sadly once a cat starts this behavior it can be very hard to stop! Talk to your vet.

  2. First, all of the cats should be neutered.  And, there is always the possibility that one or more of the cats might be ill.  So a vet check for the 2 boys would be a good idea.

Litter box problems are very frustrating for all.....human and feline.  Here's a link that you might find helpful:

Here's a link to Cat Attract Kitty Litter.  Many have had success with this product:

    Good Luck!

  3. very common since you have so many the cats are just marking terriory in other words they want to own different parts of your house maybe your house is too small for all of them i'd get rid of 2 or 3 of them then there should be less peeing:)

  4. If the males are not fixed, they need to be.  Male cats who aren't fixed mark their territory, which sounds like what they are doing.

  5. your supposed to train them to use a litter box

  6. They do need several litter boses for that many cats.  Rule of thumb is 1 per cat plus 1.

To retrain, they should get pet cages with plenty of room for a bed, food/water and the litter box.  This should force the cat to use the litter box.  After a few days, try letting the cat out during the day, but caging it at night and see if he continues to use the box.  Often, if you leave the cage door open, they'll return to use the one they have retrained in.  Later, if all goes well, they can remove the cage if they wish, but should consider leaving the litter box in that same spot.

  7. Well, cats don't usually do this unless they prefer the sofa and books to their litter box.  With 5 cats total, it is probably because they are not providing enough litter boxes.  My rule of thumb is one box per cat at most, and one less box per total number of cats at least.  With 5 cats, that would be 4 or 5 litter boxes, kept meticulously clean on a regular basis.

It's a pain to keep up with lots of boxes, but it is better than losing furniture and personal belongings to cat urine smell.

Oh, also, before I moved, my male cats decided to pee all over my couch, too.  I moved in January and I got rid of the old couch.  At my new place, I added another litter box and bought a new futon - no way they were going to do this with the futon.  So I keep it covered with a heavy duty drop cloth.  They won't pee on this because it is not absorbent.  And the added litter box seemed to do the trick.

    EDIT

Do NOT grab them by their face and shove their nose in their pee.  Johnny A - this is cruel and you are WAY off!
