How to stop mould from growing inside of a safe?

I have a safe that is not opened very often. I have recently discovered a bunch of items with green mould on them.

I understand the mould is caused by humidity, but what can I place inside the safe to reduce the humidity so it says nice and dry?

  1. Humidity and warmth is what's causing the mold to grow. There's not much you can do about the warmth, but you can control the humidity.

To remove moisture from the air, you could use baking soda or silica gel packets.

Place and open box of baking soda in the safe. Remember to stir up the powder every now and again.

Those little packets that come in shoe boxes contain silica gel. These packets are in there for the same purpose, to absorb moisture and keep the shoe fresh.

Go to your local shoe store, and find some empty boxes sitting on the shelves. Snatch a bunch of those packets and take them home. The store won't mind; those things are worthless to them. Stash them in your safe, and it should keep it nice and dry.

  2. No need to "snatch" silica packets. Silica is sold at all craft stores, in  the flower arranging department

  3. You can always clean the safe good with household bleach, and open it up for air a few times a month.  Should work.
