my 8month old puppy always nibbles, i feel like there's no way to stop him! he's not being mean, he's playing i think, he licks you at the same time etc, sometimes i point at him & say 'stop' loudly & firmly, all he does is nip my finger and make his little noises he does when he plays. i don't want to be to harsh on him, he has chew toys etc, what else can i do?

saying 'NO!' doesn't work, and trust me i do sound firm, it's not my tone, & i do mean it.

  1. Yeah thats what puppies do. they nibble and chew go to a puppy class.  get chew toys before you furniture and shoes get chewed up.

Its no bother though there only playing.  he will be only playing by the way.

he should stop but if he bites then clap to scare him.  if he bites again then clap to scare him again so he knows when he bites that big scary noise is going to happen again.  then he should stop it,

  2. they all go threw that stage..the best thing to do is when he nips even if it doesnt hurt screetch OACH and fold ur arms quickly,he should bak of and be startled by the screetch becuase thats how his brothers and sisters would tell him that he hurt them =] also dont point your finger because he thinks your are putting it there to play =] hope this helps =] x

  3. Try lightly popping on the nose with a paper or something that makes a noise. It will startle more than hurt him.

  4. Take a training class, so you will know how to control ALL puppy behaviors that you don't want- biting, jumping, barking, running out the door, etc. It will really help you and your dog!

Do NOT punish him in any way! First, yelp loudly- this is what a sibling or his mother would do. Then, stand up, put him on the floor, and IGNORE him. Dogs hate to be ignored! He will get the idea soon.

Honestly, at 8 months he is done teething and should have been taught to stop nipping by now. Consider a training class! It is much harder to stop it the longer it goes on.

  5. Walk out of the room. If you ignore him, he'll only nip you while you're standing up there. Therefore, remove yourself for 10 seconds. Then go back to that room.

Another idea: hide a treat in your hands. If he bites your hand, don't open your fingers. If he licks your hands, then open your palm and give it to him.

  6. please please understand its like a baby teething they need stimulation  toys bones(bones for dog not baby)  and plenty of mind games a pet like a child is a living thing that needs looking after and being young is the most important time time is the essence..look whatever you do goodluck

  7. Welcome to the world of puppyhood.  Pups chews, it is a normal part of their growing up and teething process  Allowing him to chew on you, is inappropriate behavior for him to learn and needs to be corrected ASAP>  There are a few tricks that you can use that may help you correct this behavior.

When he does this, grasp him by the snout and firmly tell him "No" or "No Bite". (I personally use No Bite so they know what they did wrong, dogs are much smarter than many people think)   The snout grasp not only shows him you are dominant (the alpha), but is also one of the same ways that his mother would have corrected him.  After doing this offer him an appropriate chew toy.  When he chews on it, praise him for chewing on the right object.  You have to correct the behavior now as you don't want him to get older and possibly bite someone.  I don't personally believe in hitting them on the snout as you could create a dog with fear issues and/or possibly cause them to become aggressive.

Try to always use the same command and keep it short and simple.  Consistency is a must.

    Good luck with your baby!

  8. When you point at him and say "stop", he may think youre playing.  When he starts to nip, turn your back and walk away.  Ignore the behavior.  This may take time, but he will catch on.  The way to change unwanted behavior in a puppy is to ignore it (except for peeing and pooping on your favorite comforter or rug, of course!).

  9. A lot of time doing a light tap on the nose helps.

  10. howl and cry when he nips your skin and ignore bad behaviour by folding your arms and looking the other way.

  11. you can tap him gently on the nose and if that doesnt work there are sprays you can buy that dont harm dogs but they dont like the taste and you could spray a little on your hand so that when he nibbles it tastes bad and eventually he will stop. good luck with your puppy

  12. The short and simple of it is this, you are not the pack leader. Do some obedience training to solve the problem. Try PetSmart. not only do you both learn new things, but your pup will get invaluable socialization. Always be consistent and use positive reinforcement. When he puts his mouth on you in any way give him a toy instead, then praise him while he plays with it. Good luck!
