  1. I am SO glad to see a question like this where you didn't ask about declawing your kitten! Bravo to you!

There are several things you can do.

    1. Buy him a scratching post or cardboard scratching box. When he scratches the sofa remove him immediately and put him on the post/box. Always praise him when he scratches on the scratch post/box. Once he starts going to the scratch post/box on his own, use a water bottle to spray him when you catch him clawing on the sofa to deter him from scratching on it.

    2. You can put clear double sided tape on the sofa where he scratches. They don't like the feel of the sticky on their paws and it will deter him from scratching that area.

    3. You can purchase claw covers that you place over his claws at most pet stores. He is still able to scratch himself, but cannot damage your couch.

    4. Keep his claws trimmed. My own cats get their claws trimmed every 2 weeks. It's easy to do and saves a lot of furniture lol.

    5. You can also try buying cat pheromone spray and spraying around the sofa. They also sell it in a little plug in like an air freshener. Don't worry it doesn't have a smell that humans can smell.

Best of luck with your kitty, hope some of this helps!

  2. CATS SUCK!

    they kill birds

    nasty.

  3. Hi, thanks for your answer on the kitty bedroom/bed question! I spray stuff with bitter spray (which you get in pet stores) and is a deterrent. It only really works for a few hours but, sometimes, if you do it enough, it means the cat will tire of going there and find another place to scratch. That's what happened with my (now partially dessicrated!) wicker chairs!

Also, some people suggest covering in tin foil as apparently cats hate the feel of it but, man, what a lot of tinfoil! And some kitties like to play under it too.

You could buy another cat scratching post and place it bear the sofa and then gradually further and further away.

You could also squirt kitty when you catch her at it - she'll learn, at least when you're around, to stop...

In terms of getting out the marks - I'd try a specialist leather shop or local upholsterers. They usually have good tips for cleaning and marks and might even come and repair it for you. You'd be amazed what they can do.

And I really was thinking about getting  a leather sofa and now amn't sure!

  4. I have a leather sectional and they stopped using it for a scratching post when I moved the couch against the wall and bought them their own ottoman- now they scratch that - don't know how to fix the leather though- good luck

  5. When the little "ripper" starts tearing away, give him a hit from a water pistol. Water will not hurt puss, but it will program him to associate clawing your furniture with an unwelcome squirt.

We have a 15y moggy and a 10m kitten. This worked for them.

  6. You can get a special scratch deterrent tape to put on the areas that you don't want him scratching.  However, I put a scratch post near places my cat likes to scratch.  This usually keeps him from scratching the areas I don't want him to.  The only exception to this is when he is trying to get my attention.

  7. hey i work at a pet store in the city and i also have cats at home with this problem at pet stores threres a product call pet remover which is a spay you can spray were you dont wont them to go or there is also at animal strip it has the same spray on it but its a stick on strip cheers or number is 96009120 and were in melbourne cbd

  8. hi, i work at a vet surgery and if you place a piece of tape where you don't want him to scratch and put a big smear of Vick's on it. it will normally deter the animal as it is a foul smell. it worked on my kitty and her scratching the couch. good luck.

  9. i use a cat repellant spray, which you can get from any good pet shop/online store. please dont resort to removing claws, in britain its actually classed as abuse as cats use their claws to mark their territory.
