Question:

How to stop my lettuce from turning brown so fast!

I eat salad pretty much everyday for lunch.

I used to buy actual heads of lettuce but noticed I stopped eating salad because it wasn't convenient to make. Then I just have rotting food I have to throw up because no one ate it.

But when I buy bagged lettuce it turns brown by practically the next day after I open it? What gives?

How should I store it to keep it from turning brown so fast? Do those green bags work? Any tips would be great. Buying the bagged stuff is easy for me to make my lunch, but then its like it goes bad overnight or something.

  1. In addition to the paper towel trick, be sure to avoid cutting the lettuce with a metal knife.  If you don't have a ceramic blade, only use metal to slick up what you will immediately eat.  Tear off meal-sized chunks from the head with your hand.

  2. Make sure you put it in the crisper in your fridge. I have the same problem but when i put it in the crisper it at least prolongs the browning a little bit!

    :)

  3. It means there is too much moisture.I Use a large plastic container and

put paper towels on the bottom and on top. I used to keep lettuce for over a week, but you have to check and make sure that there isn't to much moisture,I lived in a very dry climate and sometimes had to dampen the towels. another thing that goes bad quickly is mushrooms,I but them in a paper bag.

  4. Put one fresh sheet of paper towel in the bag every day. It really works!!

  5. Try wrapping it in paper towels like you would a head of lettuce.

  6. Basically it's the oxygen which is turning it brown (oxidation) so whatever you put it in you need to squeeze out as much air as possible and seal it well.

  7. What you really need to do is you the seram wrap.  Friuts and vegetables give off CO2 and thus in return receiving oxygen due to it sucking it out and that derives the plant and makes it turn brown.  They do have what they call green bags out on the market that stop the oxidation from happening, you might try to find try those out too.
