  1. Dump the clutch, and hit the brakes.

When going downhill, let the engine slow down the car, and use the brakes slightly.

You'll save your brake rotors and pads.

  2. Just forget the clutch and hit the brakes, worrying about the clutch in a situation like this could cause an accident.

  3. Push in the clutch and brake at the same time, and be prepared to turn into the shoulder if necessary. DON'T use the e-brake, it'll lock up your rear wheels, and slide. Rely on the ABS by just pushing in the clutch and brake at the same time.

  4. DO NOT DUMP THE CLUTCH  JUST BRAKE NORMALY  WHERE DID YOU TAKE YOUR TEST?

  5. just use the brake pedal, and press in the clutch right before coming to a complete stop.

  6. hit the brakes. dont worry about the clutch. unless the brakin isnt sudden. then you can put the shifter in neutral.

  7. You should be learning how to drive manual BEFORE getting on a highway!!

  8. Always hit your brakes first. It signals the people behind you to slow down and gets you slowing down sooner. Unfortunately, these are not times to learn how to perform engine braking. As a result the front rotors are going to get very hot and can easily cause distortion. Automatics and cars with regenerative braking suffer the same problems.

The only way to avoid these problems is avoid the situations on highways when they occur. Usually densely packed traffic ahead of you near on ramps or lane closures cause this. Cops pulling over someone can have the same effect in dense traffic. Give plenty of room in front of you when there are a lot of people packed together ahead. This will allow you to use some engine braking as to take the bite off of the rotors.

When driving get used to the RPM ranges at different speeds. Try to keep your revs at around 3k rpms or less while braking. Get used to doing this while slowing down. In the situation on the highway where people slow down. First hit your brakes. Then downshift quickly and as needed.

Another note is to notice when people tap their brakes or slam on them. If you watch the car in front of you tap their brakes, then there will be little or no motion. If they slam on their brakes you will see the car tip forward. From the front you'll see the nose dip or from the back, the rear lift up. This will give indication before you can see the vehicle slowing down.

  9. I would just quickly put it in nuetral and brake. Or if you have time just downshift.

  10. If you have to stop RIGHT NOW! slam on the brakes, don't worry about the clutch or shifter.

  11. Just slam the clutch and the brake to the floor. I have done this more than one time and never had a problem.

  12. Stomp on the clutch and then the brakes almost simultaneously.

Personally, I feel that it depends on the braking distance you have and the speed you are traveling at, and based on the proficiency of your judgments on the road. Don't be afraid to jam brake if you have to. Most accidents occur as a result of insufficient braking.

Important to note, never look away or squint or shut your eyes should jam-braking be the only option. Always maintain your focus on the road. Drive safe!
