How to stop the phone line?

we have 5 home phones in my house and for some reason im gettin machine calls at 3 a.m is there anyway for me to "cut"/stop my phone line without unplugging everyphone evrynight?

it wont be a safety issue since all 5 people in my familly have cellphones.

  1. Can you just leave one of the phones off the hook?

    Otherwise, if you have basic electronics knowledge, you could build a busybox with a switch, or even forgo the switch if you don't mind unhooking it.


  2. depending on the type of NID that you have, and if it is wired properly, you can either unplug the modular plug at the NID which will separate your inside wiring, or you can plug in a line cord into the test plug of the NID which would separate the inside wiring..

    if your NID is not wired properly to be used as a self test jack, or if you have an old style connection block, you can install a "test jack" at the point where your inside wiring first comes into your home, connect the wire coming from outside to the green/red terminals on this jack, then install a second jack, connecting your inside wiring to the green/red terminals of this jack, connect the two jacks together with a short line cord when you want your lines to be connected, and disconnect the line cord when you do not want the phones to be connected.
