  1. I suggest you look up on green subjects and electricity, and start there to write your essay.

  2. many electronics use power even when in "stand by" mode.. to prevent this, connect your electronic devices to a surge protector power strip, and turn the power off at the power strip when not in use...

when going out of town for a few days unplug any electronics that will not be in use while you are away.

unplug, and turn off EVERYTHING in your home, including fridge and stove (if electric, or electric ignition) then check your electric meter to ensure that the dial has stopped spinning completely. if the dial is still spinning, you either have not unplugged or turned every thing off, or someone is "stealing" power from your electric meter (this should not be the case in single family homes)

you can install timers, or motion sensors to control lighting in outdoor areas, hallways, or anywhere else this may be effective..

ensure your home is well insulated (especially the attic, where alot of heat and cool air escapes from many homes), and the windows make a good seal so that your heat and air conditioning stay inside, making your a/c boiler run less using less electricity

where possible replace 110 VAC appliances and air conditioners with 220 VAC appliances, they use less power.

replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents, or leds.

contact your local power company for more power saving tips...
