Im going camping for 1 day. I want to bring things like cheese, crackers, water ect.. But if I want to bring meat I would want to pack it with ice and keep it cool. If I was to stay longer how would I cook a dinner with meat? the ice would melt and your meat would go bad. im as confused as my question.

  1. You can buy precooked chicken and tuna in thick foil packets that are much lighter than the usual meat in cans in your local grocery store. Otherwise, since the dawn of homo sapiens, people make and carry jerky. Otherwise they don't bring meat if they won't have a cooler or 'fridge to keep it in.

  2. Eat anything that will spoil quickly first, or cook it ahead of time. As far as storing the food goes, put it where you can get it but bears and coons cannot. DO NOT STORE IT IN YOUR TENT, if you don't want to wake up with a bear on your head.

  3. If you are in any doubt about how long your meat will be stored and at what temp (cooked or otherwise) you should go for commercially prepared ready meals in pouches that can be heated on a camp stove.  You used to only get these at camping shops but most supermarkets now sell pouches which require no special storage.  You will not find them in the freezer or chiller section but out on the shelf with the tinned goods and packet ready meals.  Dried stuff like Beanfeast and pasta/rice meals are good because they are light to carry.

  4. Well eat the meat as your first meal and make a fire with matches and eat the meat before it goes bad :)

  5. first off all you need coolers so probably about 3 or 4 cooler one of drinks one for food and one the  alochlic int the family.

  6. It depends on the type of camping:

Car camping (camp site close to car) keep meat in zip-lock bags in big coolers, lots of ice. Ice will turn to water but as long as you arent going in and out of the coolers all day long everything will be fine for a long weekend trip(3 days). Plus if you are car camping then you can likely drive to a store to get more ice.

Backpack camping (hiking all gear/food with you) dehydrated or cured meats(summer sausage) work well as does tuna. They dont have to remain cold. They now have flavored tuna in a bag. That means less weight in your pack and dont have to drain off any water, and waste packs down smaller. I prefer the sweet/sour. Add the tuna to mac/cheese that only requires water and you are good to go. Or simply eat with crackers. Great source of protein especially if you are hiking.

  7. Well cook all the meat before hand, store it in an cooler with lots of ice like put the meat in between the ice, and then just warm it up on the fire when your ready to eat it.

  8. Plan ahead what meals with meat you want. Freeze the meat individually for each meal for a few days before you leave and then put it in a good cooler buried in the middle of allot of ice. If you want burgers, make them ahead of time individually and throw in any seasoning even, wrap each one in plastic wrap and put them all together in a large zip-loc or water tight container, freeze them etc. I have had more issue with food not being thawed when I wanted to throw it on the fire, never spoiled.

If your going to be gone for more than several days you may have to make a trip in to town for meat or consider taking canned meat or cold-cuts for later in the trip.

My favorite things to do for camping are marinate some chicken b*****s in what ever you like for a few hours, then freeze it right with the marinade to cook later over the fire.

I also usually boil some brats ahead of time in some beer and garlic, let them cool and then freeze before you go. Just pull out of the cooler however many you need later at camp.

Have fun, the best part of camping is the cooking!
