  1. The fish will be fine for a day or two

  2. i wrap the tank in towels.... also, get a battery operated airpump or mre lol.... like this 1:

get 2 or 3 and itll keep ur fishys alive=]

  3. to start with you could get a battery back up like they do for computers in the event of a power failure leave only the heater plugged into it since the temp will be your biggest issue then a couple batterie powered pumps with air stones for cirulation  if the tank has been established for any length of time you will not have to worry about the filter working for a few days since the bacteria in the gravel will handle the waste issues .

your number one issue is the temp droping to much

  4. Best bet is a small generator, this will run other important household things, like refrigerators, sump pumps, and furnace blowers.

For a few hours your fish will be fine, just make sure the filters fire up once the power comes back on.  If you go with the battery powered air pump get a few box filters.  You can put any filter media in there & have bio filtration.  Wrapping the tank to conserve heat helps, floating some bottles of warm water works as well.

If you don't want to go with the battery air pump or generator, you can get small power inverters that run off of your car.  If you really want to be cheap, clip a plastic cup with some small holes in the bottom to the side of the tank on the inside.  Place your filter media in the cup, and pour some water through every hour or so.  The cup is the filter, you are the pump.

    ***Edit To Add***

Lots of fish means you will have lots of dead fish in 24 hours due to O2 depletion.  This is the biggest concern in an overstocked tank with a power outage.  An understocked tank may go for many days with no electricity, average stock might make it a couple of days.  Since you stated lots of fish, it sounds like an overstocking situation, O2 depletion will be the problem.
