  1. You have a 256MB SDR Sdram SO-DIMM ram stick in it, or a total of 256MB's with the non-removable 64MB that's in it? Just curious, as the total ram amount is 320MB's.

Here's the PDF User Manual if you didn't get the User Manual with it.

(Press F2 to enter the BIOS Setup utility. You'll need to go into Boot Order and set the CDROM to First Boot Device, to load the Ubuntu O/S)

You have to download the .iso file, then burn it to a CD. (I'd use a CD-R instead of a CD-RW disk. The CD-R can't be written over. It takes me about 1hr and 45 minutes to download any Ubuntu distro,

{Distribution}, with my P4 at 3.2GHz, 2GB's of ram, and a mid speed DSL connection. I'm willing to bet that after you spend this amount of time downloading, you won't want to accidentally write over this disk!)

The following link is exact instructions on how to download the .iso file, burn it to disk, and even gives a link to a free burner software! (I like Infra Recorder, better than any version of Nero that I've had. I use it more than Nero! It's free!) Follow this page's instructions, and you'll have NO problems!

I'm strictly an Ubuntu fan. But you may want to look into this.

Edit: Just tried the Asus.com/Support download PDF link, off of my answer to you. 'Says' a "Bad or Invalid Host Name". If you don't have the User Manual, I suggest going to Asus.com, ->Support,(Top heading) On the right side click on,

    2.A1000 series

I used the Global link to download from the first time, and it took a bit to download the PDF User Manual. (I do use the latest Adobe Reader 9, though) I forgot to look where they had the Boot Order, in the BIOS Setup for this laptop. I did get to read, that F2 is the key to press, to enter the BIOS Setup utility. Boot Order should be in the top header, or in Advanced BIOS Setup.

  2. If you haven't downloaded the Ubuntu ISO I'd suggest using wubi instead (installs and uninstalls Ubuntu from within windows)

Really great to hear you are taking the plunge! just done the same myself and couldn't be happier :-)
